Biography
Born: Springside, Ayrshire, Scotland, 1960
Alexander Millar was born in the small mining community of Springside, near Kilmarnock, Scotland. The gritty industrial scenes and vibrant characters of his childhood profoundly shaped his artistic vision, embedding a sense of nostalgia in his work.
After moving to Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1976, Millar worked in various jobs, including as an electrical goods salesman and window cleaner, before embracing his calling as a self-taught artist in 1988. The lively ‘gadgie’ characters of Tyneside, with their flat caps and boots, became a cornerstone of his paintings, capturing the essence of post-industrial life.
Influenced by artists like Norman Rockwell and the impressionistic style of Monet, Millar developed a distinctive approach, blending soft brushwork with emotional depth. His early works focused on urban scenes, but he later explored landscapes and golf-themed pieces, reflecting his love for leisure and nature.
Now a celebrated figure in the art world, Millar continues to create from his Newcastle base, producing paintings and sketches that celebrate the beauty of ordinary life. His galleries in Glasgow and Newcastle showcase his extensive portfolio, while his international exhibitions have earned him a devoted following.
