Angus Gardner, the Newcastle-born contemporary artist whose daily farm walks with his German Shepherd Obi have quietly revolutionised British wildlife art, brings a rare blend of sharp humour and vibrant observation to every canvas. Where most wildlife painters capture stillness, Angus Gardner art instead freezes the quirky, character-filled moments of animals in motion — a pheasant’s theatrical strut, a hare’s boxing match, or a robin’s bold glance — infusing them with personality, dry wit, and subtle social commentary drawn from real life.
Working primarily in acrylic, Angus Gardner artwork celebrates the wild encounters on his sprawling North Yorkshire farm, transforming ordinary wildlife sightings into lively, eye-catching scenes that collectors love. His limited edition Angus Gardner prints preserve this fresh, humorous spirit, making his distinctive animal portraits accessible to a wide audience while retaining the energy and detail of the originals.
As a self-taught fine artist who transitioned from a long commercial design career, Angus Gardner creates work that feels both instantly recognisable and delightfully unexpected, inviting viewers to see Britain’s countryside creatures in a whole new light.
Biography
Born: Newcastle upon Tyne, to a Scottish-Irish father and Sicilian-Maltese mother
Angus Gardner grew up surrounded by a rich mix of cultural influences that still shape his distinctive voice in British contemporary art. From an early age he showed a strong creative streak, with one of his clearest childhood memories being the time he painted life-sized Marvel Avengers characters across his bedroom walls at the age of eight. He also kept an aviary of zebra finches in his room, fuelling a lifelong fascination with birds and nature.
After graduating in 1990 with a degree in Graphic and Audio Visual Design, Angus Gardner moved to New York City, where he taught art and worked as a graphic designer for an investment bank on Madison Avenue. Homesick for the North East of England, he returned in 1992 and began a varied career that included roles as an animator and video director across the UK, Europe, and the Far East. Over the following decades he built a successful practice as a graphic artist, illustrator, and designer, creating packaging and promotional material for prestigious clients such as Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Fenwicks, Fortnum & Mason, Aldi, and The Secret Garden.
Throughout his commercial years Angus Gardner continued to paint, draw, and sculpt for pleasure. In Spring 2023 he was approached by the publisher Wishbone and spent three years developing his first fine art collection. His debut series, Spring Walks with Obi, launched in Spring 2024 and quickly gained attention for its fresh take on wildlife. In March 2026 he became a fully independent artist, allowing him to focus entirely on his personal practice while continuing to live and work on a large working farm bordering the North Yorkshire Moors.
Today Angus Gardner shares his home with his wife Pea, stepdaughter Gab, horses, hens, cats, and his ever-present German Shepherd Obi — the faithful companion who joins him on the daily walks that inspire almost every painting. His family affectionately call him “Bird Nerd” and “Nature Boy” because of his deep knowledge of local wildlife and his vivid imagination when observing it.
Evolution of Angus Gardner Artwork
Angus Gardner artwork has evolved from a lifelong hobby into a distinctive body of work that stands out in the UK wildlife art scene. Drawing directly from observations made while roaming thousands of acres of farmland with Obi, he paints animals with humour and affection, exaggerating quirks of behaviour or appearance to give each creature a memorable personality. Whether depicting a strutting pheasant, boxing hares, dive-bombing swallows, or a queen bee, his acrylic paintings combine accurate anatomy and light effects with playful storytelling that often includes subtle social commentary or personal memories.
His technique begins with the eyes and face, instantly bringing character and “a sense of duty” to the subject. This approach, combined with bold colour and strong composition, gives Angus Gardner prints and originals an immediate, eye-catching appeal that appeals to both new collectors and those familiar with traditional British wildlife painting.
