Biography
Born: Buckinghamshire; raised on the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall
Heather Howe was born in Buckinghamshire but spent her formative childhood years on the Lizard Peninsula near Cadgwith in Cornwall, where her father worked as an artist and studio potter. This ‘free range’ upbringing immersed her in the rugged beauty of the Cornish coast, fostering a lifelong passion for the countryside, wildflowers and ever-changing light.
After completing a Foundation course and a BA in Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and Exeter University, Heather returned to Berkshire where she shared a studio with her father. There she honed her skills as a printmaker, producing copper-plate etchings and aquatints sold through prestigious London outlets including Liberty’s and the Medici Gallery in Bond Street. This disciplined early training in describing light and texture through monochrome printmaking profoundly shaped her later oil work.
Heather Howe began exhibiting early, holding one of her first solo exhibitions at the Century Galleries in Henley-on-Thames at the age of just 22. Her career has encompassed commercial design, private commissions and exhibitions across the UK and overseas. She eventually returned to live and work full-time in West Cornwall, where she continues to draw daily inspiration from early morning walks with her dog along quiet lanes, woodlands and coastal paths.
A dedicated plantswoman, Heather maintains a garden filled with wildflowers such as foxgloves, cow parsley and even a wild gorse bush, whose coconut-like scent she particularly loves. This intimate knowledge of flora adds rich botanical detail and emotional authenticity to her compositions.
