After graduating he worked as a freelance illustrator before establishing his own printmaking studio in Kent in 1984, where he specialised in original etchings and collagraphs, primarily focusing on landscape subjects.

Mark Spain’s printmaking career gained major recognition following the Great Storm of October 1987 when he was commissioned by Kew Gardens to produce limited edition etchings to support the restoration of the historic site.
