From intimate sketches to monumental bronzes, his creations embody a universal language of connection.

Biography

Born: Middlesbrough, UK, 1956

Mackenzie Thorpe was born in 1956 in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, the eldest of seven children in a working-class family. Raised in an industrial town where his father was a labourer and his mother an auxiliary nurse, Thorpe’s childhood was marked by both community spirit and isolation. Struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia, he found solace in drawing, using whatever materials he could find, from cigarette packets to his mother’s makeup.

After leaving school without qualifications, Thorpe worked in shipyards before pursuing his passion for art. Encouraged by a friend, he gained admission to Cleveland College of Art and Design in 1977, later graduating with a Fine Art BA from Byam Shaw School of Art in London in 1982. In 1989, he moved to Richmond, North Yorkshire, opening the Mackenzie Thorpe Arthaus gallery, where his emotive works began to attract attention.

Influenced by artists like Vincent van Gogh and Mark Rothko, Thorpe’s art combines vibrant pastels, oils, and sculptures to explore universal themes. His iconic ‘square sheep’ and duffle-coated figures reflect his childhood, while his sculptures, crafted with master artisans, bring his visions into three dimensions. Now based in Brighton, Thorpe continues to create, balancing tenderness with fervent expression, and supports charities through his Mackenzie Thorpe Foundation, established in 2005.
