Joy Kirton Smith’s creative roots run deep into the Worcestershire countryside near Stourbridge, where she grew up surrounded by the family painting and decorating business run by her father and two elder brothers. Their fearless experimentation with new materials and innovative techniques left an indelible mark, teaching her to approach every surface with curiosity and boldness that would later define her own artistic practice.

Although immersed in creativity from childhood, Joy Kirton Smith’s formal introduction to fine art came when she joined a workshop group at Halesowen College and achieved an A-Level in the subject. There she discovered the drawing techniques that could convey vibrancy and movement, sparking an enduring fascination with the Old Masters. She went on to study original drawing methods at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, focusing intently on Rembrandt and the Flemish school, while the classicism of the Italian Renaissance—particularly the work of Michelangelo—remained her lifelong touchstone.
