Towards The Headland

Forcibly pushed and measured ashore by the ever-changing winds, the breakers crash and burn a few hundred yards out from the beach, a cloud-filled sky watches over this watery flock, while also casting its Cumulus Nimbus eye over the beach’s occupation. Hugely popular contemporary landscape artist, Duncan Palmer often favours the punctuation of people in his uplifting, feel-good illustrations of predominantly coastal vistas and beach panoramas of epic scale and proportion, and his latest piece seen here is no exception. ‘Towards the Headland’ depicts an undistinguished couple making their way toward the eponymous headland pictured on a broad and bold horizon, tainted from its green normality by the shadows cast by the passing cloud forms overhead. The presence of said clouds, all fluffy and whiter-than-white that serve to dispel what is otherwise a deep blue summer’s sky, bleeding off to china blue on that sloping horizon, whilst the foreground is bustling with sandy tones and shades, itself countered by the luminosity of the natural light and its prolonged dalliance with the body of water that’s recently passed across this strip of golden sands, leaving its watery trail and vapour in its visually structured wake.
